Continuing My Search for the Best Rainbow Mug

Mug
Two Rainbow Mugs that I recently made in my MFCarter Vermont studios.

These are two mugs based on AI suggestions for making a rainbow mug.

The search

I have been continuing my search for the best rainbow mug, and this little journey has become one of my favorite creative explorations. What started as an AI inspired idea in a previous post has grown into something more personal as I shape it through my own style, color sense, and pottery instincts. I love the process of taking an image or idea that catches my attention and turning it into a handmade mug, original and full of character. For me, the best rainbow mug is not just about bright colors, but about the feeling it brings every time it is used.

The Creative Process

This has been a winding process, shaped by trial, error, and a few quiet setbacks along the way, including cracked ceramic mugs, loose handles, and one firing that wandered to the wrong temperature. The mugs pictured above feel like the close of this chapter in the work, and while I am fond of them, I can still feel the pull to keep going, keep refining, keep listening to what they want to become.

Handles and Glazes

The handles rest comfortably in my hand, though I suspect they may be slightly too generous in scale. Handles have always carried a kind of mystery for me, with so many directions they can take and so few that ever feel completely settled. Even so, I am pleased with the glazes. They hold the brightness I hoped for, all Spectrum Underglazes from Dick Blick, fired to Cone 5 beneath a clear glaze. I love that they stay steady, not flowing or running away from the lines, allowing the brush to leave behind something crisp, colorful, and full of intention.

What Comes Next?

Next, I will keep refining the handles and experimenting with a few more glaze ideas as I continue developing the best rainbow mug. It has been a creative process with a few turns along the way, but that is part of what makes handmade rainbow mugs so rewarding to design and make. Each adjustment brings the ceramic mug closer to the final version, and when I finally land on exactly what I want, you will see the finished rainbow mug here and available for sale in the Collections section.
